Was wondering if anyone has seen a CAD software out there similar to SolidWorks or Inventor with "parametric design".

I have seen LinuxCAD, ahhh, not quite what I am looking for.

I did find this (http://www.tech-edv.co.at/lunix/CADlinks.html), but I am looking for someone who has tried different CAD softwares and can say which ones are good, and which are not so good. Is there one that stands out.

I just realized that ProE works on Linux which is impressive, but I am looking for something a little my "reasonable" in price.

Of course it should support the basics, iges, sat, stl, dxf, and have a decent 3D renderer.

Thanks for the info.

I was a pretty big CAD nerd in HS. Huge in Inventor and so far I havnt found anything to impressive either. Alot seem to be focused on knocking off AutoCad.

We have a decent linux following here in college, some luck with EE and MA stuff, but with serious Mechy CAD we seem to be doomed.

Sorry

If you mean, www.google.com/linux

I did, and found that link in my original post.

As industrial designer, CAD is my life. I have over 30,000 hour of hands on experience with AutoCAD. As for other CAD software there is not one, windows based, I haven't tried.

It is actually probably the only this holding me to Windows.

you might wantto check appdb.winehq.org to see if any windows programs'll run in wine, by the looks of it the obvious ones won't but I don't know good CAD so I might be looking at the wrong titles

Yea, thats what I found. Not knowing any thing about cad, I thought it could be handled like , I have to loosen a 7/8' bolt and, I get the right tools and do it. When I was in school, they had drafting tables, and a whole lot of pencils.

I would guest this mean the app supports AutoCAD and SolidWork.

How, does it work, and I guess it takes a performance hit since you are running the software through an emulator.

Wine is an Open Source implementation of the Windows API on top of X and Unix.
From the Wine website (http://www.winehq.org/)
Think of it as an environment for running windows apps in Linux. It seems that someone has gotten Solidworks to run. Just be aware that people often need to tweak settings in order to get a certain program to run. You'd probably need to tweak some more settings for fine tuning (things like fonts and such).

In my experience, apps run through Wine do not necessarily run slower. Most of the time, I cannot tell the difference. I was, of course, running a differnt sort of application (games). If you have a licenced copy of Solidworks or Inventor, you might as well try it out.
