I have 3 computers hooked to the net by a hub, router and cable modem. I installed RedHat 7.2 on one of the computers, but can't seem to set up the network card so it will also have net access. I tried to configure it, but when I was testing a auto. config. option messed something up. Now I am getting a dhcppc3 login: prompt.
I also can't get back to RedHat... :/

I am pretty new to Linux (if you can't tell, which I am sure you can), but a quick learner... any help would be great.

Thanks,
-Rocky

i have a very similar setup to yours,
if you get the dhcp propt then that is a good sign. try login in by entering your username then it should ask for password. \

If you want to start from the top then at the prompt type "dmesg | less" this will list detected hardware at startup. see if your network card is there and that appopriate drivers are installed. if it is good if not then thats your prob. Chances are it is tho :) . then, i dont know about red hat but most distros use netconfig to set up the card on a network.
...Just a few things to try let me know what happens :)

Um,

Knowing what make/model of network card you have would help a lot.
;)

Also, give us more specific information concerning your network setup:

1. When you say "I have 3 computers hooked to the net by a hub, router and cable modem", do you mean that you have a stand-alone hardware "gateway router" such as those made by Linksys and Netgear?

2. Who is your ISP, and do they use DHCP or static addressing?

3. Redhat 7.2 uses NEAT (NEtwork Administration Tool) as their network config utility; open a term window and (as root) type: neat. See what happens from there.

If you have problems, repost with the specific errors you encounter.

My 3 computers are hooked up to a 3Com Hub 8/TPO which then is hooked into a Netgear Gateway Router.

Who is your ISP, and do they use DHCP or static addressing?

My ISP is AT&T (Formally @Home now attbi), so my IP doesn't change.

I tried to set it up so it would automaticly config, so now when I boot up my computer, I don't get a prompt or the GUI. I get the dhcppc3 login: I can login as root, but I can't seem to get back to the prompt or the GUI.

Sorry, I am trying to provide as much info and you need, but I am really new to Linux.

Thanks again,
-Rocky

Have you tried typing 'exit' to get out of the dhcppc3 login prompt?

I've never heard of that prompt before. ???

Nothing even at Google for 'dhcppc3'.

Are you sure that is correct?

Yes it is typed correctly, and yes, i did try "exit" and that was a no go.

I am currently re-installing RedHat so maybe I can try it again from scratch, and not mess it up again :)

i havent got that message in Linux either. However in FreeBSD , after configuring the network card, I would get a prompt with dhcpcc4. From there, I could do normal operations but with a different prompt. I think its a way of saying its connected to a dhcp server and that was the 4th pc connected. the router I used was a Netgear

After I reinstalled it, I was able to fix the problem in the installation... I was assigning the computer the wrong subnet mask. And because I am new to this OS, I did not know how to fix it. :(

Thanks for your help,
