LCD Monitor Issues

First my machine specs are
Debian Core 3.1
19 inch Westinghouse LCD connected through DVI
PCI NVIDIA MX4000 graphics card

This is my first linux install so I am a noob, sorry about that
I installed the latest NVIDIA drivers, but my screen resolution still wouldnt go about 800x600
So I then edited /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file

In front of the Modes line, I added "1280x1024" to the file and restarted X server. The monitor then displayed at the correct resolution.

My question is, I notice an annoying high pitch sound when my monitor is on, do I have to edit the horizontal and vertical sync rate in the file too?

it is really weird, with a mostly white screen the pitch goes away, but when I go back to my blue debian desktop, it starts making that sound again. Just a cheap LCD?

I would think that setting the refresh rate will do it.

any way to do that, in desktop preferences, it only allows 60 Hz, no option to change

This is the best place to change the refresh, you might have the wrong monitor type set which is why it could be giving a wrong (incorrect) settings.

I'd manually edit this section after finding the correct settings for the monitor. Best way is search http://google.com/linux with it's model number and you should find the correct settings that way.
Or find the proper configuration in your GUI that at least gets the values right
