I'm setting up my home network to teach myself networking and am having trouble understanding subnets and subnet masks. I've tried Google and JL forum searches and still can't figure things out for myself.

My network topology:

Router (10.0.0.1)
Desktop (DHCP)
Windows Server (Static IP)
Linux Server (Static IP)

On the (Netgear) router, there is a page where I can set up IP address related things. It is divided in to two sections: "DHCP Setup," which allows me to set up the "Pool Starting Address" and "Count" (count seems to be the xx in syntax like "192.168.0.1/xx", whatever that's called); and "LAN TCP/IP," which allows me to set up the IP address of the router and a subnet mask.

Given my topology listed above, I'd like to have a range of dynamic IP addresses and a range of static ones, too. To accomplish this, what do I set "count" and the subnet mask to, and what will the resulting ranges be? Of course, this project is just my means for gaining an understanding of how subnetting as a whole works, so broader explanations are appreciated!

as a side note to your studies, using static IP addresses is a broken logic that i do not agree with although its still extremely common among admins it is quite annoying, there is no reason to statically assign an IP at the client level, dhcp servers can handle this task and give the admin more fine grained and centralized control, that being said i doubt if your off the shelf router can handle that, its just something to keep in mind if you get into designing larger networks
