Well, after doing some reading and tinkering, I've decided that my resolution problem is being caused by kdm.
To recap, my problem is that whenever I try to switch resolution using the accellerated X that comes with Mandrake 8, the X server crashes and restarts on me.
I tried changing my display manager to use gdm, by adding "DISPLAYMANAGER=Gnome" to my /etc/sysconfig/desktop file. Now, my resolution problem is gone, but there's an even bigger one: all my GL games just hang upon loading. I tried running the gears demo and got nothing... Not even an error.. :(
So, it brings me to the question, does any body know a way around my problem with this new information? I'm really searching hard for a fix, but it seems like the mandrake people aren't paying much attention to the bug. It IS listed under the mandrake bugzilla, so there may be a fix eventually, I just don't want to wait! :)
Thanks for any suggestions!
