gnome-volume-control not working

I just repartitioned my system. When i booted back up, everything worked fine, but the volume control applet in gnome didnt work. It says no volume control element or device could be found. Then i tried alsamixer in xterm, it works fine, i can control volume. I don't know whats wrong with it. I am using a copy of my original partition, but all the files copied fine. Could someone help me diagnose and fix my problem. I know its gotta be something with a configuratiion file in gnome.
