slackware is an awesome distro.

for a beginner, it may seem a little difficult to use, but when you get used to editing text files instead of running an app to configure your system, you'll see that it makes more sense....

:) slackware :)

What other distros have you tried and with WHICH have you had good/favorable results.

See, in my example I started reading books and how-tos and coming to LNO months before even considering installing Linux on my WinCrash98 box.
(Note: I have been reading @ LNO since June 2000, but you can guess when I registered.) :)

A near-guru friend later (april-may 2000) installed Slack 7.0 for me.
Because of (1) my inexperience and (2) a freak bug I couldn't get it installed.
After installation I was at a complete loss.
I mean, I had no idea what I was supposed to do. I had nothing, no MC, no X, I only had 'ls -las' and 'less'.

So I bought SuSE 6.4.
SuSE was a blast. Everything worked (eventually) and I enjoyed it thoroughly through february 2001.
So then I started getting irritated at the sheer size of SuSE.
I didn't know what all the **** on my comp was doing (bloat), so after reading through LNO I gave Debian a shot.
But -alas- Debian was to me a huge PITA.
So I tried Slack 7.1 and here I am. Grateful/Thankful/Happy...you name it!

See if perhaps you can find yourself with anything in my story.

GL,
-Mike

I could type it out for you (like I've done for tens of others)...but you could also look in here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/index.html) and specifically here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/installation/index.html) for installation probs.

whats the difference between slackware and slackware - current?

current is the next version of slackware in production and you use it at your own risk. ie. if it hoses your system, then don't complain :D

I'm currently running slackware current without any problems...your mileage may vary though.

ok, i have windows installed on one hardrive, and redhat on another hardrive. I boot into linux with a floppy. When i go into linux and run fdisk to delete linux, will i have to worry about messing up my hardrive with windows on it? Will the windows drive show up in fdisk in Linux?

Yes you do have to worry about messing up your hdd with windows, and yes the windows partitions will show up in fdisk. However....

You say you have windows on one hdd and linux on a seperate hdd. Therefore the hardrive with windows will be /dev/hda, and the other hardrive will be /dev/hdx (x=b,c,d,e,f,g, or h depending on how it's connected to the mobo).

You also do not have to wipe your linux partitions before you install Slackware, during the installation, they will be recognized and you'll be given the option to format each partition before the actual install takes place.

Make sure you don't mean "partition" instead of "harddrive".
I installed Slack a few nights ago. It went decently well and it was good and all...quite nice. I still like Debian more though :) What got to me was that I had to open my browser to go get licq. Maybe it's something I don't know about, but apt-get was just so convenient.
