All,
Yes, quite the post title, but I wanted maximum google findability. There are many many people trying to get their Iriver MTP players working in Linux. The following would work for Mac, Solaris, anything that supports UMS.
For the very initiated, ghoto2 with PTP support for the Iriver T30 and a lot of trial and error with this page, and you can reformat your Iriver player back to plain old UMS. http://www.mtp-ums.net/index-old.php
Now the easy version, and the way I recommend, because the above was one heck of an ordeal.
1) Ewwww, you have to have access to a windows machine so that you can go here http://www.iriver.com/html/support/faq/sufq_view.asp?idx=387
and download the firmware switching tool.
NOTE: Iriver US told me there was no way possible to convert to UMS and that doing so was illegal. When I actually burst out loud laughing, he relented and emailed me the above link. Of course, the link is from the iRiver global home page and you can't find any hint that this is even possible on the US site, thanks Microsoft.
2) Download, install, start it up and plug your T30 device in. Using the screenshots as a guide, make sure you select the MTP<-->UMS link. Of course the pictures how converting from UMS to MTP, just make sure that it shows that the 'New Firmware' version has UMS beside it.
3) Make sure you have a fresh battery in it, because like any firmware update, if the battery dies, well, you will kill the device.
4) After you unplug the device when the program tells you to, don't touch the player for the 30-60 seconds while it is doing the upgrade.
5a) The first time I tried this, turned the player back on, it was still MTP
5b) The second time I tried, I tapped the on button, saw 'formatting' and then it was UMS.
It was then a simple USB mass storage device when I plugged it into my Linux box. I did have to manually mount it, but I am on Suse 9.2. It was pretty easy. it was detected and placed as /dev/sdf
mkdir /iriver
mount /dev/sdf iriver
(I was root, I haven't finished making this permanent for my regular account). I was then able to just drag and drop music using Konqueror to the player. Be patient, a couple of times I unplugged before the entire song got over to 'test' it.
204 ogg songs later (note, it maxed out at 165 songs in any single directory, so create subdirectories, you can set the player to play all songs on player, not just in a directory and I have about 700 minutes of music.
Why, all of a sudden did I buy a T30 player, just to hack it back into UMS mode, you can read about it here. http://mostly-linux.blogspot.com/2006/07/drm-story-piracy-halted-in-its-tracks.html
I am now ready when inevitably, DRM once again, fails.
Disclaimer. T10, T20 and T30 only. Since this is not open source, but an Iriver official product on Windows, I can't guarantee that if you try it you won't be hunted down and shot, or your player explodes, or aliens are notified to remove you from the planet. I simply outline the above because it worked for me on a T30. I think Iriver would be hard pressed to void your warranty using an officially sanctioned and distributed by them product. It will delete all current music files, and you will NOT be able to purchase online content and play it on this device after the convertion.
