Debian Sarge.
Trying to get HP Deskjet 3930 printer running.
Had to download driver...hplip-1.6.6a.tar.gz.
Got as far as the 'make' command and when I ran it the last few lines of the result were...

running build
running build_ext
error: invalid Python installation: unable to open /usr/lib/python2.3/config/Makefile (No such file or directory)
make[1]: *** [build-pcardext] Error 1
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/daryl/downloads/hplip-1.6.6a'
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 1

Any ideas what I do now?

I search with synoptic shows many, many Python related packages. I already have Python 2.3.5-2 installed.

can you install "hpijs" with synaptic?
the drivers for that printer are probably in there...

but is the python-dev package installed?

I was walked through the whole process of installing the driver and dependencies. The process is documented at...
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?t=7462&sid=bfee305e985a115fda84814e799be766
The result was a printer that doesn't work.
Concerning your suggestions,1) I just installed "hpijs" with synaptic and 2) python-dev is installed.
Is there a way to verify that the driver I installed is supposed to drive my printer?
I just joined the HPLIP mailing list at Sourceforge. Somewhere, someone has to have the answer.

http://www.linuxprinting.org/printer_list.cgi

They show the 3920 and 3940 there...either way I'm pretty sure the hpijs driver set has what you'll need.

yes i would imagine any deskjet would require the hpijs drivers, ghostscript, foomatic and gimpprint might not be a bad idea also

Well then you should be able to see the driver for your printer in the CUPS configuration screen. There might be 2 manufacturer names, HP and HewlittPackard. Let us know what drivers are available...it should be a long list of drivers.
