uh....don't know how I managed to do this, but I'm getting a load of strange network interfaces coming up during bootup. The names are nr0, nr1, etc and rose0, rose1 etc.
As far as I can gather from google, I've got some kind of radio thing installed - any idea which one? Or whether they belong to another program?
Is it just a case of removing them from /sys/class/net/ ? I've tried to remove the interfaces from the Mandrake Control Centre but they keep reappearing. How can I remove them?
BTW, I'm on an Acer Aspire 1640, and have been having a few probs (especially with sound ie. I haven't got any!) and these strange interfaces seem to be tied to the Intel card. Could it be a 'linux on a laptop' thing?
Thanx

Sounds like you installed something in an attempt to get audio working, and got a critical failure :)

Have you recompiled the kernel and added HAM support in the kernel instead of modules, maybe?
Can't find much on that laptop model either, could you run lspci (as root) and post the output so we could get an idea of what your sound card is? That will help us figure out where to go with getting sound working, but as for these phantoms hopefully someone knows what they are and how to remove them from Mandriva

I haven't recompiled the kernel but I certainly have been trying just about anything in order to get the sound working. Indeed, it looks like I'm running some kind of ham radio thing!! The name ax25 keeps cropping up but I can't find how to uninstall it, as typing in ax25 brings up no results. I've managed to stop the interfaces from trying to come up during the bootup, but I'd still like to know how to get rid of whatever the hell it is I installed!
As for the sound prob, I'll open up a new thread later.
Thanx

ok..........now they're back! They're trying to boot up but with errors.
Has anyone had and solved this prob before? Or does anyone know how to remove the interfaces or, preferably, the program that installed them so that I can uninstall it?
Thanx

sod it! when desperate, rm -rf is your friend! (sometimes) :)
I'd still like to know what the hell I did to become an unwitting linux ham radiohead so that I don't do it again!
Any suggestions are welcome.
Now on to getting some sound!
