I'm wondering if it's possible to switch console video modes on-the-fly
(i.e. without having to reboot and pass the option to the kernel using
LILO). I have different applications that work better at some higher
text resolutions, and some that run better at lower text resolutions.
I'd rather not have to reboot every time I wanted to switch...

Ctrl-alt-numpad+ and Ctrl-alt-numpad- should cycle up or down through the screen resolutions you defined when you installed Linux.

You should look at svgatextmode and svgalib in general. They probably have commands to set the resolution.

This only applies in X windows.
