So I have a recent version of Simply Mepis, 3.3.1 I think, and KDE 3.5.1

Lately, when I try to import MP3s throught the Konqueror audiocd/mp3/ folder, after about 3/4 of the CD is ripped, my whole system crashes.

My screen goes blank and I get a strange, back and forth, siren sort of sound from my onboard PC speaker.

The only way to recover is a hard reset by unplugging the computer and rebooting.

I'm wondering where to start looking to solve this one.

Any ideas?

Sounds from the onboard speaker usually have some explanations in the manual for your motherboard.

Have a look there first.

Good suggestion. I should've thought of that

Unfortunately the manual says the hih-low repeating beep is CPU failure! D'oh!

Makes sense for it to fail on the MP3 encoding...

Looks like I might have some fan problems.

Reminds me of the loose IDE cable that got jacked into my fan once. :)

There are temperature monitoring tools for Linux that show the current temp on your desktop. Furthermore you can set alert values so once the temp gets there the alarm goes off. If you set these values low enough you still may get the alarm in time before any harm is being done to your hardware. Of course you should take this as an advice of precaution only, nothing beats good CPU cooling in the first place. :D
