Hey guys,
I'm new to both linux and this forum. I have been trying to install the nvidia driver 1.0-8178, I exit X using ctrl, alt, shift, backspace. I then run "sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-1.0-8178-pkg2.run" This may be a good time to not i have the 64 bit edition of ubunt, and the nvidia drivers. I get an error to the effect of cannot compile kernel or something. I have no idea what this means, and all of the various fixes I have found on google don't seem to help. My kernel version in 2.6.12-9 -amd64-generic, which is what I get at uname -r. The whole problem is that UT2004 loads, and then the screen goes black and I have to reboot. I had the nvidia-glx installed through the synaptic package manager when this happened, so I tried the nvidia driver above, however I can't install the damn thing. Please help, and let me know if you need any more info.
Steve

Edit:
It seems that all of the sites just tell you to compile your kernel, or make sure your kernel is up to date, or make sure you have :make, kernel-sources, and gcc packages installed. How do I find this out? How do I install them if I don't have them?

You can add all your various packages through Synaptic. I'm not that familiar with Ubuntu or how it names its packages, but the kernel source should be something like kernel-source or linux-source. Use Synaptic to do a search and you should be on the right path.

Have you tried this "How To" (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75074) yet? Method 2 worked for me. I have onboard graphics on that machine, so I had to comment out, or delete the information about the onboard graphics, in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and insert the specs on my nvidia card, then run the installer. However, this was on a old HP Pavilion 6630, so it is different from your 64bit. Any how give it a look if you have'nt already.

Good Luck

Also: If you have problems, or questions about the how to, tseliot is real good about posting back and helping solve the problem. Just ask!

tseliot wrote the "How To" for installing nvidia drivers, at ubuntu forums. That is the link I gave you.

I generally use this (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia) howto from the Ubuntu wiki to install, and it seems to work. Although I've a friend who had problems with an older Nvidia card - which one are you using?

I am using the Nvidia 6600 GT, so its not too old. And no tseliots link and method 2 did not work (or any other method for that matter) it gave me the same output I've been having. It did give some good information on kernels though, and when I go to /usr/src and ls the directory, I find this output interesting:
total 28
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 2006-03-24 09:03 linux-headers-2.6.12-10
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2006-03-24 09:03 linux-headers-2.6.12-10-amd64-generic
drwxr-xr-x 18 root root 4096 2006-03-23 21:06 linux-headers-2.6.12-9
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2006-03-23 21:06 linux-headers-2.6.12-9-amd64-generic
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2006-03-23 22:36 linux-headers-2.6.12-9-amd64-k8
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2006-03-23 22:36 linux-headers-2.6.12-9-amd64-k8-smp
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2006-03-23 22:36 linux-headers-2.6.12-9-amd64-xeon
why do I have so many kernels installed? I may be wring but it would seem that I need only 1, the one for my machine, which I think is *-amd64-generic. I have an Athlon 64 3000+ proc, and am running Ubuntu 5.1 x64 edition. Furthermore, it doesn't seem to be the latest kernel available considering what I've come up with google. For some reason apt-get upgrade, doesn't find any newer kernel versions, nor does synaptic. I can find at least 2.6.16 on the web.
Thanks guys,
A very confused
