Hello,
get use to this name on the forum ;)
I plan on downloading Mandrake 8.0 from a ftp site for my first step. Should I download the entire mandrake directory and copy it to cd or what?
Also, what is the layout of directories for the cd?
Thank you

i would recommened you buy it.
If you are a total newbie.
You get lots of great software this way without having to compile and install kernal's.

Hey, I just installed Mandrake 8.0 a few hours ago...
Unless you have a very quick connection and can burn your own cd, it's always better to buy the cd.
I have been buying a linux magazine everymonths for a year and I only use Linux for the first time today (writing to you from Gnome/Mandrake). This way, I have a good collection of cd and have the choice of distro...
If you still want to download it, I'm sure you'll find the exact instructions from the mandrake web site on how to install it on your cd..
Good luck

if you are going to download a distro, check .iso/cd burning how-to (http://linuxiso.org/cdburninginfo.html) at linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org) , they have links to many .iso's

One of the things I always reccomend for a new linux user is to buy the first distro. The reasoning behind this is that it normaly comes with more documentation than if the CD was downloaded. The Docs are also hardcopy in most cases.
It also never hurts to support the linux community.

You might want to consider checking out CheapBytes (http://cart.cheapbytes.com/cgi-bin/cart) and Linux Central (http://linuxcentral.com/) and/or make a donation to whatever. The nice thing about Linux is choice. The price is what you want to pay.
You might want to consider the O'Reilly book "Running Linux" as well as it's a great guide to Linux.
