When installing Mandrake 8.1 the wrong graphic card/ monitor was configured causing when I start Mandrake it starts up but then screen goes black. How do I change my settings to a div graphic /screen details before madrake has been loaded(because then my screen is already black) And also when selecting the a dif type of graphics/monitor, can I test the setting first before ok'ing. Because I am not sure witch setting will work with my monitor

Log in as linux 3, then when your at the console enter your log in name and password. then do 'su' for root privleges, and type (i'm not 100% sure on this, as i have not used Drake for a while) XFree86Setup or XFree86config, this will allow you to reset your card.
To log in to a non X mode, either use your bootdisk and type linux 3 or (I think) hit the tab key when booting from the hard drive.

The problem is that even before I can logg on the screen goes blank... I can see the hard disk is working (so linux are loading) I will try and hit tab as you said when linux are loading from the hard disk
