When I was on linux a year ago I know there were alot of "txt based" ones, but to be honest with you, they were really annoying. Are there any GUI versions or anything? swooshonln 03-09-2006, 03:12 PM oh, I have Gentoo linux, and I looked on the limewire website, and they provide an RPM, and I dont think I can use those to install. ph34r 03-09-2006, 03:19 PM emerge the rpm tools, and use alient to convert from rpm to a tar file. extract and enjoy Pafnoutios 03-09-2006, 03:48 PM No, gentoo has limewire. 'emerge limewire' I'm on gentoo, I have limewire. x86: 4.8.1 ~x86: 4.9.37 eskiled 03-09-2006, 05:02 PM I'm sure you are very aware of this but i'll say it anyways: Portage has 2 very nice built in search functions. "emerge -s packagename" will search the for "packagename" as the title. "emerge -S packagename/function/etc" will search for "packagename/function/etc" in the descriptions of all packages. Heres an example: root@claw # emerge -s limewire *** You are not in the portage group. You may experience cache problems *** due to permissions preventing the creation of the on-disk cache. *** Please add this user to the portage group if you wish to use portage. Searching... Pafnoutios 03-09-2006, 05:18 PM I've found it very slow when searching through the descriptions and not just the package names. I usually go to http://packages.gentoo.org to search descriptions because it is much faster (and more informative). toad013 03-09-2006, 06:42 PM personally i use FrostWire, an opensource alternative to LimeWire. Pafnoutios 03-10-2006, 07:35 AM Interesting. If it were in Portage I'd emerge it right now and see it, but I'll have to look at it more later when I have time. P. N. Guin 03-10-2006, 10:07 AM personally i use FrostWire, an opensource alternative to LimeWire. Me too. Frostwire (http://www.frostwire.com) uses the exact same code as LimeWire, but it will never nag you to buy the Pro version, and also does not impose any filtering on your search results. From the 'About Us' section of their website: About FrostWire FrostWire is a fork of the very popular LimeWire Gnutella client. The purpose of FrostWire is to keep and maintain the freedoms that LimeWire LLC may be forced to withdraw. LimeWire LLC has been considering an alternative path to keep them out of any legal situations they could be forced into. From what we understand, LimeWire LLC intends to implement a DRM filtering technology into their client. If LimeWire ever decides to implements this DRM technology, we will be prepared to remove it from our code and distribute the client under our own branding. However, we will continue supporting the LimeWire client development and do not wish to make fundamental or drastic changes to the LimeWire core itself. FrostWire will not break with LimeWire's design philosophy. We will always do our best to maintain a strong relationship with the LimeWire Development Team. FrostWire, although very much like LimeWire, will never offer a paid version or a subscription service for the download or use of the FrostWire application. FrostWire is a not-for-profit project. We will never bundle our software with any type of adware, spyware, malware or collect any personal or private data. FrostWire will always remain free as in both price and freedom. :) Parcival 03-10-2006, 12:50 PM You may just as well use gtk-gnutella that comes packed with every distro. Does the same as Limewire, just with an uglier gui (well, it's gtk, after all :p ). je_fro 03-10-2006, 09:05 PM To heck with all y'all! Use giFT for all 3 major protocols.... justlinux.com
