hello!
im trying (for the first time) to install 5.10 on my pc.
however, during install i get this message:
the network autoconfiguration was successful. however, no default route was set: the system does not know how to communicate with hosts on the internet. this will make it impossible to continue with the installation unless you have the first official Ubuntu CD-ROM, a 'netinst' CD-ROM, or packages available on the local network.
im stumped. what am i suppose to do on this message? why is it saying "impossible to continue.."? what kind of network information does it need?
the install does allow me to continue with the installation, but this message hunts me.
tips anyone?
thank you!

Well what Ubuntu does is downloads packages from the net, so you've got the latest stuff straight away. So if it can't get onto the net the net-install will fail. If you've got the ubuntu-5-10-install-*arch disk then its got all the packages you need. You should be able to ignore that message and carry on with the install, which will complete with out any problems, and then fix the problem with your net access afterwards.
It just means that you'll have to live with older packages for a little bit.
How do you connect to the net anyway?

hello!
im on a lan so i have a proxy server.
would that make any difference?
so i can ignore this message, then after the installation is completed, i configure my network then download the latest packages?
ubuntu downloads on the internet during install, is this the reason why they have only 1 CD? mandriva has 3 CDs at a minimum.
where do i get this "ubuntu-5-10-install-*arch". i got my installer thru ship-it.
thanks!

Hi,
i have a proxy server.
If you choose a HTTP souce for your /etc/apt file, then you are given the choice to put proxy information into it, that would probably make it work.
so i can ignore this message, then after the installation is completed, i configure my network then download the latest packages?
Yeah it *shouldn't* be a problem, I know it wouldn't in a pure Debian install, so go for it.

Ubuntu is different from other distro's in the sense that they include Gnome, Open Office etc, the user isn't given the choice during the install, so they can fit everything onto the one cd. However Mandriva etc, include KDE, Flux, Koffice etc etc, so need more space for the packages. More space means more cd's :)

That's the name of the iso on the ftp servers, since you got the cd through ship-it you don't need to worry, you've got everything you need to do the install.
I'd try putting your proxy info into when your asked for it when choosing a HTTP mirror, I take it you got the error when choosing a FTP mirror?
If not, just ignore the message, you'll still get to a Gnome desktop, where you can fix the proxy information.

It should work if you manually do the network settings during installation. If this fails, just finish the install without a connection to the internet and make the necessary changes to the config files afterwards.
