Just wondering how much of a box is needed to run a server for a game like Unreal, Half-life, or the upcoming tribes II.

Provided one has a fast stable internet conection, 128 megs of ram, and a decent processer, is this this enough to run a server do you think?

Also, is feasible to hang around in X and do your thing while people duke it out on your server?

Just wondering

Hey Harvey:

(Whats it like being 6' tall invisible rabbit?) *grins*

I'd say that depends on how many gamers you're gonna let connect. IIRC - for most game servers a PII 400 or greater is reccommended, but I know for a fact that mush/mud/moo/muck can be supported reliably on P90's so long as sufficient ram is available for all the data objects.. (I've seen a couple of P90's running 5 mushes each, on dual 100 Mbs Ethernet cards with 128Mb ram.) As to high end game servers (Quake et.al.) -- if you've a lot of players connected, you wouldn't want to be mucking about with X ... although you wouldn't notice it the players sure would. ....

Depends on what games. I have run a 8 person QuakeWorld/Quake2 server on a P2-233 with 32mb of ram. Plan on a minimum of 64mb though, with 2mb per player if possible. Plan on at least a P2-300, with 8mhz more per player if possible.
