I think suse is pretty stable, and its great for detecting hardware and also installation. I'm using it right now

Go to http://www.zdnet.com/eweek/stories/general/0,11011,2700122,00.html for a professional opinion of SuSE 7.1 Pro.

I hate suse 7.1 Kde and Gnome are too reliant on each other, you cant go with just one. And iff you just uninstall all KDE apps, your system will be very unstable.

Not true !
Suse 7.1 professional with the 2.2.18 kernel is very very stable, much more stable than Red Hat and I used RH for two years.

So do not take it as an offence but check your hardware, NO operating system will be stable on dodgy hardware.

It also depends on configuration, right ?

Just look at www.suse.com (http://www.suse.com) uptime, 300 days, yes 300, no other linux distro has this so far.. go and check it. So yes stable all right !

I was just wondering but how do you know that no other distro has been up for 300 days?

Everyone has their own opinion on distros.

A Redhat user will usually tell you Redhat is the best.

A Mandrake user will also usually tell you that Mandrake is the best.

And so on and so on.

As for stability, someone could be running SuSE on some specific hardware and not have any problems, while another using different hardware could have all sorts of problems. They will of course, not recommend SuSE.

I personally like Caldera's eDesktop 2.4 while others may have nothing but negative comments about eDesktop. I've never had any problems with it, but others may.

So what I suggest, make a note of all your hardware, visit all the distros websites you are considering, check for hardware compatibility, software included, kernel versions, xfree versions etc. and also take some notes.

While at their websites, read the faq's, read posts in their knowledgebase (if they have one) so you can get an idea of what to expect during installation and any similar hardware you may have.

Do some research on your own and base your decision on that, not what everyone else thinks you should get or not get.

PS - I think you should get Caldera's eDesktop 2.4
