I'm running Red Hat 7.1.

Since about a week ago, while fiddling in X, the display sometimes turns into a group of streaked lines and the operating system just halts (no error messages). Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and Ctrl-Alt-Fx don't work either.

What I remember is that over the past week, unlike before, I've been using Enlightenment and Opera. It crashes in Enlightenment, but after trying Blackbox in order to see if Enlightenment is the problem, Blackbox crashed on me as well. So basically my finger is pointed at Opera. Sometimes I use it and it's fine, but just now I loaded it and a few seconds later, X crashed.

I can't remember whether or not X ever crashed when I wasn't using Opera, and I know I'm not being VERY descriptive. Are there any log files or core dumps I could show you guys that would help you solve my problem? Help would be appreciated! :D

look for XFree86 logs in /var/log. the important one for my system is /var/log/XFree86.8.log

also, check in your home directory for .xsession-errors

look through them before you just stick them up. i've found they are generally pretty descriptive about what's causing problems. if you can't pinpoint anything try posting from just the last X run.

btw, no new video cards or anything, right? i put in a geforce2 and i keep getting random freezes when i use agp....which is half of the whole point!
but, i digress...*sigh*

No, I haven't installed a new video card, but my video card is 100% carp (4MB, no OpenGL, it came with the pc :().

From /var/log/XFree86.9.log:

Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/75dpi, removing from
list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-2/misc, removing from
list!
Could not init font path element /usr/share/fonts/ISO8859-9/75dpi, removing from
list!
Could not init font path element /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic, removing fro
m list!

Do you think there might be a problem with the X font server crashing? I heard that happens sometimes in Red Hat.
