i lost my motherboad/processor manual.
i got a new case, and wanted to move my intel i850 motherboard to it, but it seems as if the heatsink is screwed to the motherboad. i think i need to remove the heatsink first.

i cant figure out how, and intels site doesnt have a howto. i think i have the retention mechanism as shown to the right of the two pairs in this picture:

how do i remove it?

the metal clips you talked about in your first post are spring loaded. No screws.

you need to press down on the tops, and then using a flat head screw drive pry up the end past the clips on the socket. But as I said, no screws, so I don't think this will stop you from removing your motherboard.

thanks, i'll give it a try

but it really does seem as if the heatsink is screwed to the case. i discovered that my new case (and all the cases in the shop) doesnt have this screw layout. it seems as if it only existed for the i850 design, and intel soon abandoned it with Prescott 478 processors.

heres a quote from an old site (reviewing my processor & motherboard):

These retention clips also attach to the back of your computer case's motherboard tray, meaning most, if not all, older ATX and AT cases will be incompatible with the Pentium 4.

it seems as if this stupid idea was for this i850 motherboard, and because it was so stupid (like RD-RAM), they left it, and all newer ATX cases wont fit my motherboard either.

this i850 review from dans data confirms:
This means it's not possible to install a P4 motherboard in an ordinary ATX case.
