I am running Redhat Linux 9.0, and use the connectivity program that comes with it (redhat-config-network 1.2.0"). It is a python program (ver 2.2.2) which invokes a gtk(?) gui front end.

My computer and phone share the same line. In order to know when I have an incoming phone call and be able to answer it, I have a call-waiting modem and call waiting.

If I answer a call while online and talk longer than a few seconds, I have to deactivate the connectivity program, and reactivate again to go online. Sometimes it happens I am unable to deactivate the connectivity program. I get the message "unable to deactivate". If this occurs, I am forced to shut down, and reboot. I tried killing the process, in hopes that might initialize the program, but that does'nt do any good; if I bring up the control panel, the entry for dialing in still says "active".

Any thought on whether this is fixable? Can I do anything in order to avoid having to shut down and reboot?

I could be wrong, but I think that version of python is an old one. I think they are up to 2.2.4 or something. Maybe the thing to do is try and upgrade python. I tried to do it myself on my system in order to get bittorrent to work, but it didn't seem to work properly. Let me tell you what, you get python working, and you post where you got the rpms and all of that, maybe it would help me.

Red hat 9.0 isn't that old? My advice would be to get a different distrobution. If I had a spare computer again I would try them all out. Mandrake well, acctually I can't remmber what version, but it is like a year or 2 old now, has been working pretty well for me, although upgrading some of the packages is a pain. I don't recommend fedora. From what I saw of the one I installed on the box I gave my mom, I was not impressed. It just has gnome and the cd burner was not easy to get working. I don't really miss that computer much though because it does not have a usb port.
Actually, this version of Mandrake I have is awful too, I could only burn coasters of linux cds, and had to use windows to burn them properly. I miss the days when they included 20 different cd burner programs.
