Suse 10.0 is FREE. As such it can't include proprietary codecs like mp3, divx etc which would result in paying royalties etc. But all the players you mentioned support playback if you install the right codecs or plugins.

Anyway, search on the net, you should be able to find a howto to get multimedia support back in (I don't use Suse, so can't really help you much). It shouldn't be more than a simple addition of a repository and yum yum.. :)

Follow the directions here to add repostitories to YaST.

http://www.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories

The repo you're looking for is Packman.

One person told me that one:

you have to open yast, choose 'add source of installation' and add one of the mirrors of packman
http://ftp2.skynet.be/pub/packman/MIRRORS
Afterwards choose install new software and search for mplayer, divx xvid, win32
this will result in a list of available software, which is one click away of installing

I thing it is right,do you ?

Pretty much. After you add Packman to your list of repositories, the packages you want to install are kaffeine, xine-lib1, w32codecs-all, and libdvdcss2. This should take care of most of your multimedia needs.

Entering new sources in YaST can be a little confusing at first. But there's a simple formula you can follow.

1. The protocol.
2. The server name. This is the portion of the name after the "http://" but before the next slash.
3. The directory. Everything else from the server name to the end of the URL.

In your case, that would be:
HTTP
packman.iu-bremen.de
suse/10.0

And that's it. Just start up "Software Management," wait for YaST to sync to the repositories, then install the packages you want.

On Off N/A http://packman.links2linux.de//index.php4?action=cat&cat=1

and I can see packman.links2linux.de..... 85 times on Software Source Media why is that?

Thank you paj12 for helping me I have to make it short becaus I`m on the way to work and I will look into your answer in about 12 hours later.

I have no idea why it would be showing 85 times. That's seriously messed up!

I've included some screenshots of the relevant screens from my box. I can't think of any reason why you're not able to add the correct repositories. I hope you can get your situation worked out and this doesn't sour your experience with SuSE Linux. It really is a great distro in all respects except for its broken multimedia support.

EDIT: You'll have to cut and paste the URLs for the screenshots. Bravenet used to allow linking to images; now they don't. Go figure.

Check out www.mplayerhq.com
I use this with SuSE 10.0 and it works well for all formats as long as you download the appropriate codecs from the mplqyerhq site.

Good Luck

It would be preferable to make the YaST repositories work so you can get automatic updates and all that, but if you just want it to work now, you can grab the RPMs themselves and install them. Here they are:

libxine1 (http://packman.links2linux.com/download.php?t=b&id=15995)

kaffeine (http://packman.links2linux.com/download.php?t=b&id=13382)

w32codec-all (http://packman.links2linux.com/download.php?t=b&id=13060)

libdvdcss2 (http://download.videolan.org/pub/libdvdcss/1.2.9/rpm/libdvdcss2-1.2.9-1.i386.rpm)

Download these and install them with YaST and you should be good to go at least until the next upgrade.

Dont think the problem is with the 'free'. Its just that they are afraid that they might possibly tread on some other ppl's feet (software patents thingy). Yeah mplayer is a rather gd media player. Their web site used to have an welcome page that protest against these software patents, as their player can play just about everything under the sun as a standard package.
