I'm using mandrake 8.1, soundblaster pci 128 (configured as ensoniq 1370). The sound works but it's just way to low. Espesially in KDE. In Gnome it's a bit higher. I can't get any of the window managers mixers to work!? Sometimes I can get a pretty normal sound level in Gnome by raising the volume with an audio player, but only sometimes. Sometimes if I've played starcraft or something the volume can turn a bit more normal (sometimes, in gnome)

Try this :

Log in as root. There you should have access to the mixer in kde or whatever. Raise the volume there.
I had the same problem, but fixed it.

Me too, same problem.

I just used gmixer to turn the volume up, only problem I found was that the level kept being reset all the time. Had to do it each time.

There doesn't seem to be any mixers. When I open the KDE mixer I get a blank window and when I open the gnome mixer I get the message: "I was not able to open your device. Pleas check that you have permission to open /dev/mixer and make sure you have sound support compiled into your kernel"
I checked the dev directory and ther is no file or directory named mixer

try downloading umix. It's console based, and has a way taht you can put it in your start up scripts so that the volume stays the way you want it.
