ppp will not redial

I have debian testing and an external zoom modem that is set to disconnect me when there is an incomming phone call. However, every time I get disconnected, it doesn't redial automattically. I'm using the persist option in pppd, and I have alst tried demand with no luck. The strange thing is it used to work a few months ago. It gets really annoying whan I'm trying to download something and telemarketers call every five minutes! Thanks for any help.

1. Is your modem a V.92? Have you checked into the Modem on Hold feature?
2. Is there some sort of *70 kind of code that will dial a line when it becomes available.
