I got a new external modem and was happy to try and get it to work so I can connect to the net through Linux.

I was reading the HowTo about external modems and jumping from section to section to find how to make it dial. I was able to connect through kppp using tty0S, but there was no effect after the connection, nothing more, I used Opera but I coulden't connect to any site, so I refered back to the Howto and it said something about a program called minicom. I had to run it as root for the first time 'minicom -s' to save the configuration file, but and it worked. using the AT command I recieved OK, after that I ran the program as normal user but got permission denied to ttyS0, and now kppp gives modem not responding message.

please help :-(

ps sorry for the long message

Have you set up all of your information in kppp for your isp? If not you need dns, login id and password.

Thanks for the reply, I connect in windows with dynamic dns, and I ticked this option in kppp, I provided my username, password and isp telphone #, and it worked .. but after the connection I could not go anywhere.

But this is not the problem NOW, because after I used the minicom as root, I think the permission for the serial port ttyS0 is changed and I cannot even query the modem in kppp,

what should I do?

Try entering your isp dns servers in /etc/resolv.conf and post back if that doesn't work.
