thanks for all your help with the dual installation. I went for it and successfully put both win98 and suse on the machine, or so I thought - but come the first boot up, and i can't access linux. i get a screen giving me a choice of OS, where win98 is fine but linux spits up errors and dies half way through booting.
The partitions are
hda1 - dos
hda2 - /boot (ext2)
hda3 - swap
hda4 - / (ext2)
should i have put linux on hda3?

and the point it seems to start complaining in the linux boot sequence goes something like:

fatfs: bogus cluster size.
fatfs: bogus cluster size.
read_super_block:can't find a reiserfs
read_old_super_block: try to find super block in old location.
read_old_super_block: can't find a reiserfs
kernel panic = VFS = unable to mount root fs on 03:04

i tried using my boot disk and got the same problem. its all too manky :(

What did you use to partition your harddrive? I had a similar problem and it turned out the fat32 partition was 'bogus'(not correct starting or ending cylinders, I guess) causing linux to not boot.

Windows sitting on your face...? Surely you can find a better woman than that ;)

I had similar problems before; what did you partition with? All of my problems were fixed when I used PartitionMagic... its a great investment, I recommend using that, if its not what you used this time..

i used fdisk in linux to first delete my partitions and write a new table, and then used a win98 startup disk to create a primary DOS partition, with fdisk also. I've noticed that it's only FAT16, not 32. The other ones i created in the linux installation. I don't really know what to do, would partition magic really solve it if linux can't seem to locate itself (if that makes sense...)? have i made the partitions wrongly?
:(

Most likely...
All of those partitioners are fairly primitive. Partition Magic is the best. If you can't afford it, you could always get a Warez version, but I don't recommend that... the programmers deserve the money; they've made a good product.
