Is there a GPL alternative for Pinnacle Studio?

Also, what firewire card would you recommend? I've got a digital camcorder and am wanting to capture and edit video from the camcorder.

Any firewire card should work, just pick one from a brand you trust. Also, Cinelerra is supposed to be good (it's used by big movies houses, ILM and Pixar among them).
