Merry Christmas all. I have not posted for a while as all was going well, but I trashed my Linux box and decided it was time to upgrade to 8.1. Upgrade did not go well so I re formatted all except /Home and started again.
Problem 1. I appear to have several things running that I do not need or want. This is a standalone PC with a 56K modem sitting on top of it. No networking required. During Linux startup I noticed that HTTPD-Perl, SYMPA and "failed" to bounced PL? are all starting. When I log in as a normal user there are 4 copies of Konqueror running minimised at the bottom of the screen. Also one copy of cut and paste and one of Alarm. I cannot close or maximise these and just have to wait 10 seconds until they give up and close on their own. I can go in to the Control Centre and look at the running taske but I am not sure which ones to get rid of.
Problem 2. Realplayer will not work properly. I kept the RPM in /Home and re ran it. Pictures are fine but it tells me that "sound is in use by another application". Has the file structure changed? I have a SB AWE 64 and all other sounds are fine. There is a new player I have downloaded but it is a .bin file and I have no idea what to do with that.
Problem 3. This is an old one but I have never been able to resolve it. I have a Matrox G400 and a Belinea 10 30 20 17" screen. Every time I get to configuring X it tells me that I can have 4.1 with 3D. It identifies my screen as being capable of 1024x760 at 76Hz (not a Belinea) and offers me 800x600 or 640 x 480. If I select anything other that 3.3.6 and 800x600 without 3D I get a black screen. I have tried every combination of screen res/monitor and I end up re running the Installer to get back to X configuration to get an image again. Sometimes I get to try 1024x760 and it looks fine so I say, yes I'll have that within the 10 seconds, and I still get a black screen.
I don't know how to use the command line to get round this. Where should I start?

Best regards,
David.

For first problem you have probably installed many packages that you dont need in this case
uninstall apache and httpd-perl packages and for the third problem try to shutdown sound server in KDE Control Center. And for the second problem KDE does the same thing to me too sometimes try disabling "Restore session when logging next time" option in KDE Center. I got no idea for problem 4......
