i've just installed suse 9.3 server and all was going fine until i tried to setup the monitor - it refused to recognise it (even though the previous install of suse 9.2 did) got an error box saying something about no fonts, it was so small i couldn't read it - anyway, i did a stupid thing and selected 'save' - now after reboot i can only get to run level 3, if i try and use 'startx' it reports an error with the xserver - 'no monitors found'. hopefully there is a simple fix for this.

Just call up YaST in your terminal and navigate with your keys to the part where you can setup your X server again.

i'll try it tomorrow, i'm not sue starting the x server again will work as during boot it tries to start and fails, as i stupidly told it (i guess) to use a monitor its not happy with. anotherstrange thing, i posted a question about ypbind failing during boot, well now i've installed suse9.3 server instead suse pro 9.2 it seems to work fine now, it finds the NIS domain no problem - previously it would fail to join even doing it manually.
not sure what is going on now - started yast up from the command line, the setting it was on is the same as when it was first installed which worked but for some reason now does not work - the error message is 'umr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/xtest does not exist'

It seems you have uninstalled something or configured SuSE to find a non-existant package...
Well, as shadow said, why not post your xorg.conf file for us to see? it helps to point you in the correct direction...

I think I must have asked it to use a non existent package, anyway, I took the easy ruote out and just did a total re-install and it works fine now, changed the settings of the monitor no problems this time. I cannot find a DVD (I can download 6 iso CD images) iso imageof SUSE 9.3 server, only 9.3 pro seems to be on DVD. Oh well, its up and running now, ypbind is happy, got samba and swat configured and working great. One thing I can't figure out is how to remove old NIS users from the database - there are a whole load of non-existent useer at the logon prompt.
