First, I know you can do it with ctrl alt +/- but that is not what I want. Some of these users have no clue about computers. What I want to do is have X change resolution after the user logs on using GDM. My problem is that I don't know what files GDM reads other than gdm.conf (which doesn't have option for what I want to do). Well, the question is: Does GDM read .xinitrc or .Xclients? and if so, what command would I use to achieve my objective? Thanks for you help in advance.

In kde, the file is /etc/XF86Config, in Section "Monitor". But those are system-wide configs. I haven't tried this, but would Linux accept a .XF86Config in each users home directory, with the default resolution in that file?
