Major news on the MS Vista front!
Jim Allchin (Windows development head) has told Bill Gates that Vista is broken, and the problems are so severe that the OS may need to be scraped.
Vista in major trouble (http://www.smartofficenews.com.au/Computing/Platforms_And_Applications?article=/Computing/Platforms%20And%20Applications/News/E5T7U6H8)
Keeping the FUD to a minimum, this is an amazing victory for the open scource development model!!

"Microsoft is now racing to move in that direction: developing a solid core for Windows"
Weird article.
It does shed a lot of light on the problems they have had. But if you read closely, you will notice that the guy walked into Gates's office in mid-2004 and said Longhorn was broken. I think they have fixed the big problems now. Or at least tossed out what was giving them the fits. It was a little nice to see, just as linux has been "hitting its stride", so to speak.

It would be if Windows was currently "broken", but as the article states, these events happened last year. Bill Gates was eventually persuaded to mostly scrap the code and rebuild Vista to remove the idiosyncracies left by thousands of programmers "doing their own thing".
I still don't think it will be as clean as Linux (http://www.internetnews.com/stats/article.php/3524911). But, maybe it will be better than it was... which would not be a positive development for open source.

It's nice to see some (apparently) realistic reports on Hasta-la, I really don't like the way MS's proponents keep insisting that "it'll allll be better when [insert product here] is released". I don't dislike MS as much as I used to when I used their products, and I hope they do manage to fix it before they start selling it, but I'm not holding my breath.
If they do make it better, that'll more than likely spur the OSS community to improve Linux to compete, so it might not be such a bad thing. If MS finally release a decent product then it'll be better for everyone. Windows will still be playing catch-up for a long time in many respects because *nix was well-designed from the start.
