i installed xfree86 4.0.3 using the Xinstall.sh scripts. My systems is a compaq presario 1200 xl-125 notebook. The video card that's in it is a trident cyberblade.
i'm running redhat 6.2.
after configuring x, the best thing i could get was 24bits 800x600.
the 1024xwhatever never shows up right.. all i could see is a one inch strip of the screen on the right hand side. the rest is black. 800x600 comes out almost right except that the screen shrinks down to a 4x5 inch rectangle that i cant expand. anyone else have this problem? know a fix?

All I can think of is to try all of the different X config tools or manually edit your XF86Config-4 as I had to do for my Toshiba laptop.

Did you try searching for your laptop or a similar one with the same video here (http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/). You may find an example of the configuration to use.
