could somebody, as concisely as possible, explain to me what is meant by "embedded systems"?

a non "PC" computer system inside of a device/piece of hardware
like a "digital video recorder" ie TiVo
has an "embedded" computer system to run the device
that is when you tell the TiVo to record all the movies with Allisa Molano, you are using the embedded system/OS to program the device to do that function
some of the hardware pieces inside the TiVo are standard PC hardware, like the hard drives it records the video on, while other parts are special to that device
the OS that runs the device is the "embedded OS"
