Right now I have 4 primary partitions and dual boot between Win98 and Linux. My partitions are set up like this:

hda1 Win98
hda2 Linux /boot
hda3 Linux /
hda4 Linux swap

My question is which ones have to be primary and which ones have to start before the 1024th cylinder?

If I wanted a triple boot, could I put / in an extended partition at the end of the drive (say hda5), make my swap hda6, and put something new in hda3?

I just wanna try something new (maybe Debian or FreeBSD) and I'm not sure how to do that on one HD.

All 4 partitions are primary. If you have a modern version of Lilo, or another decent bootloader, nothing has to be before 1024. But if it's old Lilo, then /boot will have to be before 1024. As for the extended partition stuff, it won't work like that. The extended partition itself would be hda[1-4] so you wouldn't have a spare partition left over. You'll probably have to get a new hard drive for more primary partitions.
