I'm a newbie, but I did take time to read some of the instructions on how to make a proper post. Here it goes.
I'm running Mandriva 2005 limited on a Pentium IV desktop. Kernel 2.6.11
My scanner is an HP4200c. When I boot into the KDE desktop, I see a scanner icon that says "Kooka Hewlett-Packard 4200c". But, I can't get it to scan.
MY TROUBLESHOOTING:
A right click and look at permissions shows that it belongs to root. I've tried booting as root, but the desktop does not contain the scanner when I do and the hardware configuation wizard does not have an option to change permissions.
I tried typing "sane-find-scanner" in the terminal . It returned
found USB scanner (vendor=0x03f0, product=0x0105) at libusb:002:006
#your scanner was (probably) detected. It may or may not be supported by
#SANE. Try scanimage -L and read the backends manpage
Typed "scanimage -L" . It returned "No scanner identified".
Tried looking at some logs as directed in the hardware forum "read this first" post. Started with "dmesg" . What follows is not all of it, but it looks like it contains some problem areas
