I'm still new to Linux so my question might be a little elementary but I hope you'll forgive me that. I have a modem that's not listed as a compatible hardware (at a Mandrake site) but the manufacturer has a driver for Mandrakelinux 10.0 and I succeeded in installing it but it's still not working properly (slow data transfer) so I think I'll have to buy a new one. There's this Creative Labs Modem blaster that's listed as compatible and certified too, it has no driver for Linux included with it though. Does this compatible certified thing mean that Mandrake will recognize it just like it did my SBLive sound card and my Radeon VGA card without having to have any drivers and Linux support from the manufacturer? I also looked up some externel serial modems (the ones I was talking about are PCI) that's not listed at all as compatible neither at Mandrake's or at the manufacturer's but serials are said to be almost always compatible and working with Linux. What are the chances of that?

i used to have a modem blaster and it worked well. it was an external one. i remember back then, i read everywhere that most serial ones (external) would work.

Just about any external serial modem will work, most ISA modems (with jumpers) will work, many PCI modems won't . Check the hardware-howto at www.tldp.org for compatability lists

But if the modem you want is listed as 100% compatible, that likely means that the drivers are already included in your distro, yes.

Also, if the modem you're getting is a controlled-based modem (which means it has its own internal processor to process data, instead of using the main system's processor to do it) then it's much more likely to work right out of the box... but they are a bit more expensive.
