They show it running XPee, but I bet Linux would scream on it!!! retsaw 09-07-2005, 12:39 PM You don't believe this is real do you? The specs seem a little unbelievable to me, particularly the amount of RAM and solid-state hard drive that it purports to have and the pictures just don't seem right, those lenses on the processor seem too large and in the wrong position to do anything useful. psych-major 09-07-2005, 12:48 PM I picked it up from /. and assume it to be real, as it's not currently 4/1. But I did notice there is no price listed... cybertron 09-07-2005, 01:10 PM Having just a little trouble believing this, although it would be cool if it were true. But psych-major, who's going to buy your other IBM when these beasts are available (albeit at around infinity billion dollars I'm sure). It's future-proofing. Most people don't have a terabyte of storage, and these have a terabyte of memory.:) psych-major 09-07-2005, 01:23 PM I could sell my ThinkPad for $1 million and have it be a heck of a deal! I see this being a defense dept. toy, note the solid state hard drive rather than rotational. retsaw 09-07-2005, 01:38 PM /. is hardly a reputable news site, so I wouldn't assume anything there is real solely on the basis that they posted it as an article. I do really wish this was real, however I see this more likely being a scam to attract private investors and then do a runner with the money. q6z4k 09-07-2005, 01:49 PM Maybe I'm wrong, but wastn't there a limit for 32Bit procesor, that it can only access 4GB of RAM? cybertron 09-07-2005, 01:50 PM The plot thickens. Below is a picture from their website of the interface for this new kind of memory. Remind you of anything?;) http://atomchip.com/db4/00366/atomchip.com/_uimages/256Mx6M.jpg I got this from the Register, and even they admit they're skeptical. I guess time will tell. cybertron 09-07-2005, 02:02 PM Maybe I'm wrong, but wastn't there a limit for 32Bit procesor, that it can only access 4GB of RAM? The Register figures it must be a 64-bit processor since even Windows managed to report 1 TB. Of course, that's assuming the screenie wasn't photoshopped. JayMan8081 09-07-2005, 02:02 PM No, I don't think I've ever seen that type of connector before. ;) I would have to go with the general consensus here and say that the site is a hoax of some sort. psych-major 09-07-2005, 02:18 PM I'm starting to be skeptical, too. Quantum is primarily a tape drive and library manufacturer, and there's nothing on their site about producing a 6.8GHZ proc, although Atom has referenced them via the trademark. And, the current SSD drive leader in the 2.5" format is BitMicro, and their largest capacity drive is currently 75GB. Apparently the Quantum trademark does not reference the tape people, but rather the dude's own patent for an enhanced magneto-optical storage thingy... justlinux.com
