When you run uname -a, is the CPU type that it prints out the type that your computer actually has, or what the current kernel is compiled to run under? When I run it, it lists it as a 686, which is currect (it's a PPRo box), but I'm running the stock SMP kernel that came with RH7.0, which I would think was compiled for 386, not 686. I'm curious to know what the kernel is compiled for so I can tell whether I need to recompile the kernel to get it optimized for the 686 (I'm having a number of problems getting the kernel to compile, so if I don't need to do it for the moment (OK, this wouldn't be as much of a need, but it would be of some immediate use), I could put it off until I have more time. Thanks!
