Since I'm getting another hard drive so I can install whatever distro and expirament, I've decided to tackle debian next. I attempted to download it last night and my connection speed was less than enviable. I was downloading at 1.1kbps and there were large gaps of time when nothing happened at all. I am on DSL and can normally download much, much faster. Where should I go to download and get the iso image quickly (IE no after the 158 hours that gozilla calculated)

Also, I saw three ISO's. Do I need all three?

ftp.kernel.org worked really well for me. I was hitting around 250K on that site.

sweetness. Thanks. Now about those iso's. Can I just download #1, or do I need all three?

debian can be installed with just the #1 cd

but if you have dsl broadband, you might consider doing an ftp install, i think it is better plus you don't download as much junk, plus you don't use up a cdr

i just prefer doing it that way, you might try it so see if you like it :)

I've never done any ftp install before. I can't do that from windows tho, can I? I'm starting off with a blank secondary hard drive and windows on the primary. I'm planning to download the iso, burn it and then install on 2nd hard drive. Can I do an ftp with this setup?

yeah, just boot the box from the debian floppies (2 disks). it will start the install, tell it to put it onto hdb1 or whatever you partition it as, it loads the 4 driver floppies and then pick ftp
it has you pick which ftp server(s) to use, then you choose the stuff to install, and away you go
all you need to download through winders is the boot/root disks, and the 4 drivers disks. as long as your nic is "normal" and gets detected ok, then you don't need the 11 base floppies, it will download the ~15mb base .tar.gz from the ftp server

just an idea ;)
