ok .. i know this is a total newbie question, but i've installed mandrake 8.1 and am trying to install some drivers for my PCMCIA card. The installation program says that by default the kernel source is normally in /usr/src/linux, but i don't have that directory.. is the source for my kernel somewhere else by default in mandrake or do i need to d/l it from an ftp?

Get rpm package for your drivers that should solve the problem ;)

If you are still using the default kernel from the original install, then just install the kernel source from the Mandrake cd. It should be on the first or second cd.
