I am running debian woody and installed alsa drivers, getting sound now :D but seem to be having two problems which may be related:
1. when I modprobe snd-seq-oss I get the following errors
/lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o: unresolved symbol snd_hidden_kfree_Rsmp_3d62778c
/lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o: unresolved symbol _snd_magic_kcalloc_Rsmp_2061fcb1
/lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o: unresolved symbol snd_magic_kfree_Rsmp_734de7d7
/lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o: unresolved symbol snd_hidden_kmalloc_Rsmp_91c87dfa
/lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.18/misc/snd-seq-device.o: insmod snd-seq-oss failed

I do get regular gnome sounds but
problem 2. but I can't play shoutcast streams nor mp3's
Any words of advice to this predicament for a humble newbie would be greatly appreciated

Well,
I tried installing the nonbeta alsa drivers but that didn't work, returned back to the betas and still same probs.
can't play audio in xmms and can't modprobe snd-seq-oss. any help?

I'm not educated on how to fix this. It seems like you messed up compiling your kernel. You could start here: Google For Linux Stuff! (http://www.google.com/linux?hl=en&q=unresolved+symbols)

I've recompiled several times.
Quick q though, when I recompile the kernel, I know to keep in sound support, now should I just get rid of all other modules in the sound section?
So far this is what I have found on the net:
1. Possibly IRQ conflict or DMA (?!!)
2. kernel headers not installed(pretty sure they are though, check when I get home)
3. possible conflict with mpg123 and other plugins etc.
4. permissions for xmms set incorrectly
5. permissions for some audio devices in /dev/ not set properly(I set and regrouped them though (666 and even 777 at some point).
6. I'm hallucinating all of this and we are just a thought of some fat guy on a couch.

Well, I'm hunting hard at work now, this seems a somewhat prevalent occurence with sound cards so I'll keep ya'll posted.

It's Working!
I guess I didn't follow the directions well enough, but I recompiled my kernel with all the sound modules off except for general sound support as module.
Then built a debian package for the new kernel and also built alsa modules in another debian package and installed both.
I had to add the alsa modules in the /etc/modules list but works fine now. the sound isn't that great in midbass but maybe it's just shoutcast.
anywho, i hope this helps someone. anyquestions just email me.
