When troubleshooting sound, check the speakers

I initially had a problem with sound requiring me to disable the onboard and use a PCI sound card. But then...

After compiling alsa 3 times and installing 2 different sound cards, I finally discovered the speakers built into my LCD monitor had been muted through the monitor OSD. Doh!

Just a reminder that it pays to check the painfully obvious!!!
