Click to See Complete Forum and Search --> : My box keeps crashing
A fortnight ago my new Athlon XP1600 / DDR / Geforce 2 / 21" started crashing. It does it randomly now, but I can be sure it will be down within two days.
This problem is happening with kernels 2.4.17, 2.4.17-ac, 2.4.19-pre3-ac.
I've checked /var/log/messages and I know what everything means execpt this Apr 15 14:08:26 Priss -- MARK -- line, and everything looks okay.
Any ideas on where to start?

Overheating maybe? Try running it without a case or part of its case for a while and see if it still happens.
Did you do anything specific at that time that you can remember? Maybe upgrade / replace a card or maybe unplug a connector to test something? Can you be specific as to the nature of the crashes? Does it crash completely, e.g. reboot or does it just exit out of X, or just hang up indefinitely? Is the system overclocked at all? If you run any other OS, such as Windows or BSD, does it do the same in those?
Off the top of my head I'd say power supply, CPU, RAM. Those three things IMHO usually lead to instability and spontaneous reboots, crashes. It could be the CPU is too hot, the RAM / CPU has gone south, any number of things.
scanez: It is running with the case off :/
bdl: I don't think I was even messing about with it when it started crashing... and it completely hangs, I can't even get into it via ssh. It's not overclocked and I don't use anything else on this.
I'll try swapping the hard drive for a win2k one tomorrow. And I'll go test the temp now.
Thanks

Are you running Ximian GNOME? I tested that on a few boxes, and one of them showed symptoms like this. Once I switched to xfce, all was well.
Nah njcajun, it's even crashing at the console.

Some components such as harddrives are often better cooled with the case on depending on your fan(s) arrangement!
My box is in a very dusty environment and monthly I have to shut down, vacum out the dust puppies and use a toothpick to ream the crud out of the fins on my heatsink. :D

I had an Athlon 900 that crashed randomly, for no reason. Strangest thing. I also had a GeForce 2 card in it. I never figured out what was wrong with it, and it's now completely dead.
What are the symptoms? Does it just crash, then do nothing? Is the power still on when it crashes? How long does it take before it will boot again?
