I'm working on my own root/boot floppy right now, and I was wondering if anyone knew of a text-only browser that was smaller than lynx or links? Ditto shells, is ash the smallest?

The "Boot Disk HOWTO" (available at Linux doc project) mentions 4 shells including ash - the others being lsh, kiss and smash. I couldn't tell you which is smallest but worth a look. Just be sure they can run your startup scripts ok.
I think you'll be hard pushed to find a smaller browser than lynx (apart from maybe an older less featured version of lynx!). You may be able to trim it down if you compile it yourself (ie see what options you can switch off)
