Quick question: Has anybody, or does anybody know of anyone who has, gotten Windows XP (under vmWare running on Linux) to recognise their iPod?
I have a new 60GB model, which works brilliantly under Windows XP on this machine, but I'd rather not dual boot (it's a hassle, and I can set up vmWare to have access to my music folders here in Linux quite easily).
I'm trying to track down what the problem is; XP under vmWare doesn't see the iPod as an iPod; it sees it as a device which it "cannot start". I'm not sure if it's a vmWare issue, or some kernel incompatibility with the iPod (kernel 2.6.6), both, or neither.
Cheers,
S

When not try and run the iPod natively under Linux with a program like gtkPod or something similar? It is fairly straight-forward to do and with many distributions doesn't require any kernel changes.
Yeah, use gtkPod, or if you have KDE 3.4 or greater just type "ipod://" into konqueror location bar. Well I don't know if that's a SuSE 9.3 Pro function, or standered in KDE 3.4, but still you don't need Windows to get into your iPod.

Yeah, I know I don't *need* Windows to get into my iPod, but I've just paid £275 for this: I'd actually like to use the official software ;)
gtkpod for now. I can always try fiddling with iTunes at a later date.
If I use gtkpod and plug my iPod into another computer, will it wipe the music off disk? (Or is that an iTunes DRM 'feature'? ;) )
No it shouldn't delete anything off of it. Your iPod is really just a fancy UBS HardDrive, that can read itself, and play back music off it's self.
As for iTunes, I don't know if emulating, like wine, would work, but you could always give it a shot.
if you are willing to pay, you could run iTunes with Crossover natively.

This is just an opinion really and has nothing to do with actually getting itunes working under linux but...gtkpod is really just as good as itunes... ive used both and apple seems to want to cripple the ipod in some ways with itunes. like i tunes makes it really hard to transfer songs to other computers that dont already have said song. or you going to a buddys house and trying to pull songs off his computer...In anycase i have never tried to do something with my ipod that gtkpod couldnt do.
ArgPirate, I _totally_ agree

Guess this is just one case where OSS wins out over proprietary apps, huh?
I'll have to throw my hat in with gtkpod. It's a lot better, imo.
