Hopefully I can find an answer here on this one: I installed SuSE Linux Professional 7.1 on my Dell Inspiron 5000e laptop today. No real complaints except one. Every-time I try and check the battery status with KBatMon or similar, the application just vanishes! Even if I try and run it through KDEControl Panel.

If I try cat /proc/apmd or similar on the command line, SuSE reports that apmd is there; if I try a "start" command the error is:

segmentation fault

If I stop the apmd service, and then try and restart I get the same error. If I try apm -s on the command line, the same error.

Obviously I would like to check on the status of my battery, and even control power management. I've spent the best part of four hours so far searching the web for answers, and the nearest I've come to one is setting apm to run in the kernel configuration; however, as far as I can tell SuSE has enabled it by default?? Is this right?

The other thing is, I've heard that this can be due to a buggy BIOS- anyone had similar experiences?

I'd appreciate any help/advice offered

Thanks ahead of time all!!
