Hi!

I just installed and X didnt work properly at setup. SO I ignored this, ran setup and thought I would come back to it later.

On completion of the install I ran setup to configure my X server and the interactive menus were just full of gobbldeygook (technical term for random ascii characters).

Help.

PS, Does KDE run under X? Or is that another GUI?

Newbie

Did you check and make sure that your card is supported? It may sound obvious, but it's a good place to start.

Kde is a desktop. It needs X to run.

Thanks for the reply, but the problem isn't with running X, its with running setup.

The *ahem* DOS like coloured screen where you can configure the keyvboard X settings, Sound etc.

THATS's the part that's all goobldey gook.

These are all dependant on the distro you have, but try either XF86Setup, xf86config or Xconfigurator.

Also check www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) to verify that your video card is supported in the X version you are using and what Xserver it uses. Ensure the correct Xserver is installed.

I have a non supported card (Savage 3 chip set I think) I did manage to get everything working by looking on XF86 and making an adjustment to one of the config files XF86Config (I think). Did the graphical installer work for you or did you use text mode?

Since i been playing around with my linux box & installing rh 7 alot. I learn that the best way of loading linux is threw the text mode. when setting up my video card i try out some other setting even thow my video card sometime is not supported. out of all the time i set it up on other boxes i have about 95 % chance that i could get the video card working.
