Hi,
I just recently got Fedora Core 3 and this is my first time ever using linux. I am trying to load java but dont understand the instructions that come with the manual download. Here is the link.
http://java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#selfextracting
I open up the terminal and log on as root but am stuck on the next step. I downloaded the self extracting version is that matters  .
Any clarification on this would be gr8. Thx l8er

what step # did you get to? The manual is pretty straight forward. Just type what they tell you to. :p

I too had a very difficult time getting Java Installed. I used Debian so my experience might be a little different from yours. I created a new direcroy under usr called java. I moved the package there and followed the instructions from there foward and it all worked great! Last I used Fedora was Core 1 so i never put Java on it (nothing required it). A good (abliet stupid) way to trouble shoot intalling java is to install Limewire (i guess another java app would work as well but that was what i was trying to get to work). Install it and run it from Terminal. It will probably fail and will tell u its various errors and you can move on from there. My error was i put java in the wrong directory (i think my home or somewhere stupid). Anyway, i hope that helps out!

Ok, I guess I am jsut not completely understanding what 2 do. I have donwloaded the linux selfextracting version of Java. It was saved in the .bin format(is this the right one for it?). I have gone into the terminal and logged on as root. Then when the instructions say...

3. Change to the directory in which you want to install. Type:
cd <directory path name>
For example, to install the software in the /usr/java/ directory, Type:
cd /usr/java/

I dont have a java file in my filesystem nor do I kno how to make 1(the make new folder button isn't highlighted). Can some1 tell me wut command 2 type in after I log in as root? I tryed to type: cd /usr/java/ but it said file name was not found and i also replaced jave with bin/ but still no avail. Thx in advance.

You might, as root, have to change permissions on the file. As root, type chmod -777 "filename.bin" <Enter> and then, try to install Java.

it said the command was not found. I am thinking about starting all over from scratch. Can some1 get me started as to what to click on to download and how to get started on the installation? Gonna see what I can do in the mean time. Thanks again.

My apologies! Try chmod 777 with the options I gave you before. I typed it wrong, my mistake!

# chmod 777 "jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin"
chmod: cannot access `jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin': No such file or directory
this is what came up.
When I download the RPM package it saves to the desktop as <jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586.bin>
Once this is downloaded and I am logged in as root I get lost
Thanks again

i just suffered the pain of the java install on debian.

(isnt there and RPM to use? If so, just rpm -ivh java.rpm and ignore the bin file)

If using the bin, one major step missing that I had to do, was put the path to the java/bin folder in my PATH variable.

So, if you install in /usr/local, the bin will extract itself into /usr/local/java.x.x.x and there will be a subfolder of bin.

You need to add that folder to your PATH.

Post if you need more help

Just read your last post....if on Fedora, use the RPM and ignore that bin file....the RPM should install what you need.

Again, just run:

rpm -ivh java.rpm (or what ever the file name is)

as root

Wait, are you sure you're downloading the RPM? Did you follow these instructions? http://www.java.com/en/download/help/5000010500.xml#rpm

also, not to correct klachenfus as he is technically correct, but a better option would have been to chmod +x java.bin, as this will only add the execute permission, not grant everyone access to the file.

This is just a tighter security option that might be a better way to start learning as you are on your first install.

again, klackenfus was right but starting good security habits early is always good.

ok thanks 4 the quick replys. Gettin late here so I will probably try it tomorrow morning if I struggle with it any more tonight. Just 2 be sure I am on the right track...I downed the file name <jre-1_5_0_04-linux-i586-rpm.bin>. After this I open terminal and log as root. Then do something with "rpm -ivh java.rpm" this tht happybunny mentioned? Not really good with all the terms used in the terminal but I am orderin a book that should help me learn more about linux :). Thanks again.

You've got yourself a binary file, rpm -ivh will not work. Once you extract the RPM, as root, you'll be able to use rpm -ivh xxx.rpm.

fought (and won) the java install on FC4. I also found there directions confusing and they did not work! I did use these (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=59385) directions, and they worked great. If the directions you are following are correct, it should have created a directory under usr/lib/java/ I think. But if you need to make a directory the command is
mkdir , I, however installed java in usr/local/ so it would work system wide. Wheather that statement is actually corect or not, I'm not 100% sure, but I have 5 users, plus root, and my java plugin works, system wide.
Good luck to you! It can be somewhat frustrating, when your new (I've only been at this 6mos. myself) to this. Just be patient.

for java on fedora core 3, follow these step by step instructions:
http://fedoranews.org/contributors/stanton_finley/fc3_note/#Java

that site has other great stuff also

You've got yourself a binary file, rpm -ivh will not work. Once you extract the RPM, as root, you'll be able to use rpm -ivh xxx.rpm.
Then I don't think java has a RPM file download for java. I clicked on the RPM download and thats what it said. I will have some time to try figuring this problem out today and hopefully this issue can be put to rest :). Thanks again.

Please tell me what this 'terminal' is and how to get there. I do not have the slightest clue as to how to operate this Linux OS. I have downloaded Java but have the slightest how to install it. I need basic basic instructions.

Thanks

javaconfused: what distro?

the "issue" i found with java is that it doesn't put the java executable into your path, so it doesn't look to be installed, when it is. You just need to make a shortcut in your path to the java program.

terminal=shell=commandline=konsole.

Can you open any of those?

when you do, type:

chmod +x javaexxxxx.bin (whatever the name of the bin is)
./javaxxx.bin

that will launch the install. Answer the questions and go through the install.

Once the install is done, you need a shortcut somewhere in your path that points to the java install....something like:

ln -s /location/java /usr/bin/java

that might do it.

Right click your mouse, anywhere on the desktop and you will get a box with severall options. The top one should be open terminal, left click on that ( open terminal) and it will open (it will look something like ms-dos, only with a white backround).

Here we go----
Well i've got the terminal opened up now but i have other problems.
Now I cant log in as root so I tried to install in the home folder but when I type in the chmod command nothing happens. I typed in the ls -l command to see if i could install--nothing happened. What am I supposed to do? I really need java on my computer. I am starting to hate Red Hat Linux.

Still Confused

what do you mean "nothing happens"? chmod +x javawhatever.bin will just return your #prompt to you. ls -l will then show that javawhatever.bin is executable.

then, type ./javawhatever.bin and it will install java.

You should log in as root to do this.....not sure why you cant.

After you open the terminal, type su , you will then be prompted for your password ( the one you used when you created the root (administrator) acount), you will then have root permission. You can then chmod a+x java.....
and also install java. Did you try these (http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=59385) instructions? They worked very well for me when I had Fedora Core 4.
