I have been having a little trouble with a laptop overheating which I think is OK now using a cooler, is there a programme, utility or command that will let me know what the temperature of the cpu and graphics chip? I am running Suse 9.2 and the other day got a message saying the proccessor temp had reached 63 degrees before shutting down, so I guess this info is in there somewhere.

Thanks for any help.

you will have to set up lm_sensors (as long as your chipset supports the sensors) which is partially done in the kernel and partially done in user space.

if you google it, you will likely get a ton of hits likewise if you do a search on our forums you will find some threads on how to set it up.

Once you have lm_sensors working you can use gKrellm to help monitor it. There are a few other monitor apps but I can't think of any right now...

I'm rather partial to xmbmon, probably because it didn't completely kill my computer when I used it (I had to actually pull the plug out of my computer to get it to restart after trying to use lm_sensors). Probably just my bad luck, but I've never had any trouble with xmbmon. Unfortunately it doesn't integrate with other programs as well, but I did get it to display the temp in my superkaramba theme so I'm happy with it.

Anyway, google it and you should be able to find it easily if you're interested.

Thanks, but I have just tried lm_sensors and xmbmon, neither of them work with my hardware, are there any other programmes out there? lm_sensors is bundled with Suse.
